UP TO THE CASTLE THROUGH ALFAMA.

"SANTA APOLÓNIA"

Lisbon's Santa Apolonia station (Lisboa Santa Apolonia) opened in 1865 and is the oldest railway terminal in Lisbon. Situated on the bank of the Tagus River in the historical district of Alfama of Lisbon, this station is the starting point for most international trains, and where they end their journeys in the Portuguese capital.

LISBON - "SANTA APOLÓNIA"  TRAIN + METRO STATION

Avenida Infante Dom Henrique is the largest avenue in Lisbon, with about 12 km, always running by the river. It is one of the main accesses to the central and historical zone of the city from the municipalities to the north, as it does not cross densely populated areas, being a very passable road (three lanes in each direction, being two for all type of vehicles, and one for public transport).

MILITARY MUSEUM

Located in Lisbon's waterfront district, overlooking the Tagus, the building that houses the museum is an interesting monument. At the main entrance, there is a monumental portico designed by the French architect Ferdinand de Larre, which survived the earthquake of 1755. The apartments were restored at the end of the 18th century and embellished with paintings and statues by Portuguese artists. On the eastern façade, an imposing fronton over the portico has a group sculpture by Teixeira Lopes.

Founded officially in 1851 and called the Artillery Museum, new decorations have been added to the rooms, with contributions by major Portuguese artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Columbano, Malhoa, Carlos Reis, and Veloso Salgado, making the visit doubly interesting.

The tour was designed to be a learning experience, since through the military items on display, including a sword belonging to King D. João I (1385-1433), and the decorative paintings, the visitor learns about some of the great themes of Portuguese histories, such as the discovery of the sea route to India, the Portuguese participation in the First World War and the pacification campaigns conducted by Mouzinho de Albuquerque in Mozambique in the last quarter of the 19th century.

In the Pátio dos Canhões (Cannon Yard), you can look at a valuable collection of artillery pieces while you relax in the cafeteria.

AROUND "ALFAMA"

"ALFAMA"

The typical neighborhood of "Alfama" has the same appearance as the city of Lisbon, before the earthquake of November 1, 1755. This is because "Alfama", being built on rocky soil, escaped from the Devastation Caused by the massive earthquake, which was followed by a gigantic fire and a tsunami that took the waters of the Tagus River to the "Campo de Ourique" neighborhood, just above the Estrela Basilica. Thus, when you walk through "Alfama" you will appreciate the aspect of the ancient city of Lisbon, the capital of a huge empire that lasted until the independence of Brazil.

Of all Lisbon’s neighborhoods, Alfama is the most bewitching. This is the city’s oldest quarter, its warren of narrow streets and crooked lanes steeped in history and a joy to explore. Nearby, the residential Graça mesmerizes with its colorful character and local flavor – Lisbon at its most authentic and unassuming.

Alfama’s beguiling attractions include Castelo de São Jorge with its solid, honey-colored battlements and tree-lined verandas. Several museums punctuate the neighborhood. Consider visiting the Decorative Arts Museum for its fine collection of valuable antique furniture. Across the road is the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, a terraced viewpoint complete with pergola and azulejo (tile) panels. Tram 28 stops nearby and takes passengers up to Graça. Alight near Igreja da Graça, a religious site of majestic proportions.

"SÃO JORGE" CASTLE

TRANSPORT:

The nearest metro stations are Rossio (Green Metro Line) (- Praça da Figueira - bus 737 to the castle), Baixa - Chiado ( Blue + green lines ), and Terreiro do Paço ( blue line ), but involves a 20-minute walk.

Minibus service 737 ( PICKPOCKETS ) goes directly to the main entrance, while the quaint tram 28 ( PICKPOCKETS ) is a more enjoyable option but does require a slight walk. Remember to take a bottle of water. Due to the positioning of the castle, it is unsuitable for tourists with limited mobility.

Built by the Visigoths in the 5th Century, the São Jorge Castle was enlarged by the Arabs in the 9th Century and modified during the reign of Afonso Henriques.
Its greatest period started in the middle of the 13th Century and went up to the 16th Century¸ the era in which the castle was occupied by the kings of Portugal. The visit will take you more than half the morning as the area is quite expensive. On top of the castle, with its eleven towers, on the same grounds, there is a small museum, a café, and a restaurant.

The best photos that can be taken from the castle: before noon and at night, in the low season, when the days are short.
